The Happy Rock Project

It started as a simple little project to keep the kids occupied on a hot Arizona day. We had gathered a bucket of smooth beach stones on our trip to southern California, and the most logical thing we could think of was to paint them. We had a blast painting up bright colored rocks with silly faces, happy words, and cool designs. However, we weren’t sure what to do with them all when we were done. After all, we do live in a fifth wheel trailer and space is at a premium!

I read about some people who left painted rocks and left them around at a festival somewhere. That inspired me, and we decided to leave the rocks at various places as we travel around. The goal was to bring a smile to people’s faces when they found them.   After several weeks of leaving rocks around America, we realized that we were missing out on the best part. We didn’t know if people actually FOUND our rocks!

My darling husband, Papa Nut, came up with the idea to put our website info and Facebook info on the back of the rocks so that people could let us know that they found our rocks.   Ever since then, we’ve had hundreds of people find and log our painted rocks! It is so much fun to hear from people that it made their day to find a rock, or that their child found it and was so excited.

We have even been known to place a rock and then sit back and watch to see if someone picks it up! We all get a kick out of watching people find them.   Some people just walk on by. Some pick it up and then set it down again. Some grab it on the run. A lot of people stop, pick it up, and then read the back and look around, before heading off with it.

Sometimes we just drop rocks off as we are driving through an area. We leave them at rest stops, gas stations, store parking lots, restaurants, parks, curbs where we were parked, etc. We also leave them at tourist attractions, like State Parks, National Parks, museums, and pretty much anywhere we stop. Some people keep the rock, and some move them on to a new location for someone else to find. It has been so much fun seeing where they turn up!

Check out our Facebook page to see all of the different places the rocks have been found. We have recently started painting shells too, and leaving those near beachy or waterfront areas. Our ideas are limitless! The best part is bringing a smile to someone’s face. It’s an anonymous gift of kindness.

Keep your eyes open. You never know when some rocks will show up in your neck of the woods. If you find one, don’t forget to let us know on Facebook!
