Cheesy Fun In Indiana

20160714_115743_003Have you ever seen cheese being made? How about sampling dozens of flavors of specialty cheeses, before you decide which ones you will purchase? Well, you can do both of these things at Guggisberg Deutsch Kase Haus in Middlebury, Indiana.

Deutsch Kase Haus, Shipshewana IN (2)Deutsch Kase Haus is translated “German Cheese House.” This fun little shop was started in 1979 by an Amish gentleman named Ralph Bontrager. They are proud of their award winning Colby cheese, but are famous of ALL of their delicious cheese flavors.

Deutsch Kase Haus, Shipshewana IN (3)Whenever we are in the area, we stop and watch the cheese being made. It is usually only made in the mornings, so plan accordingly, if you want to see them actually making the cheese. The kids love sampling all of the cheeses and curds. One of our favorites, that we buy every time we go there, is Bacon Cheddar!

Deutsch Kase Haus, Shipshewana IN (1)The shop is right in the middle of Indiana’s Amish country, so you will still see the shop is run by Amish people. You can also buy many different Amish food and goods there, as well as cheese. We picked up a pound of homemade butter and some other snacks, along with several cheeses, when we were there.

In general, Middlebury is a great town to visit. We like staying at an RV park right down the road in Shipshewana. If you are in the area, you definitely need to check out Guggisberg Deutsch Kase Haus for some delicious cheese fun!
